Types and thickness of wood suitable for engraving

We laser engrave natural solid wood such as oak, ash, birch, beech, pine, and other wood species suitable for laser processing. The engraving result directly depends on the wood density, grain direction, ring structure, and moisture content.
Wood thickness is not a critical factor for engraving, as the process affects only the surface layer. However, surface preparation (sanding, oiling, varnishing) has a significant impact on the final appearance.

Precision and applications

Laser engraving allows clear text and detailed graphics even on uneven or strongly textured surfaces. Since there is no mechanical contact, the solid wood is not pressed or damaged.
Laser engraving on solid wood is most commonly used for:

Decorative elements,

Serial marking where consistency is important.

Engraving depth, contrast, and texture

During engraving, the laser removes the top layer of the wood, so the image is formed by the contrast between the engraved area and the natural surface. Different wood species react differently to engraving — softer woods produce stronger contrast, while harder woods result in more subtle contrast.

Due to the natural wood texture, the engraved image may vary slightly across the surface — this is considered a natural property of solid wood rather than a defect. If a cleaner surface is required, protective masking tape can be applied before engraving to reduce soot residue.

Laser engraving on solid wood is performed using provided vector or raster files (DXF, SVG, PDF, JPG, PNG). Before engraving, we assess the wood species, surface condition, and design detail to select appropriate parameters and achieve a stable result.
